Astoria Finds: Taverna Kyclades

So in one months time, I have been to two Greek restaurants in the neighborhood.  It just so happens that when anyone comes to meet me in Astoria for lunch or dinner, they always want to try a Greek restaurant, understandably so.  This time we headed to Taverna Kyclades and I can see why this is one of the most popular greek restaurants around.  They have a great seafood selection and the portions are plentiful.  You definitely come here for authentic greek food and seafood.

We made it one Sunday afternoon and the place was crowded, it didn't take long though to get a seat but even as crowded as it was, we never felt rushed.  We spent time talking, catching up, and enjoying a range of lamb, greek salad with some of the best feta I have ever had and stuffed fish entrees.  I see why this is one of the must go to spots in Astoria!

Sweater Weather

Zara sweater stripe sweater blue sweater

I am so happy for the weekends.  I look forward to them and treasure every minute because my weekday has turned out to not be as balanced as I expected.  Work/life balance is very important to me and its unfortunate when its not promoted.  I, along with others, have been putting in thirteen to fourteen hour days with little to no recognition.  This could be due to a number of things, understaffed, last minute deadlines, poor management but regardless, it is exhausting.  So when the weekend comes, I try to get as much done as possible and spend every minute with my husband.  We've only been married six months and sometimes I feel as if I never get to see him.  I even stayed until 1am last Friday so I wouldn't have to go in during the weekend so I could spend it with him.

Last weekend, we visited my cousin and her family.  There was a nice chill but not too cold and this Zara sweater is a great addition to my sweater collection and it was an unbelievable price.  They have so many great sweaters this season, it was hard to narrow it down.  I realized that I really like stripe shirts and sweaters.  I also know that I like very light pants and these Theory slacks are comfortable without being too thick.  Once again, these were supposed to be cropped pants but I am just too short.  I layered an Ann Taylor classic white button down and my black heels with the gold tips which I accented with a gold necklace and bangle.  A casual outfit to relax and much needed unwinding.

Long Sleeve Dresses

banana republic long sleeve dress shirt dress

When I was in Philadelphia a few weeks ago for a wedding, I went over to Lancaster the next day to visit friends I grew up with back in Miami.  What I didn't realize before I got there, is that there are a really great set of outlets there!  Originally I told myself, I didn't anything else, I've bought enough for the fall and I don't need to shop for a little bit.  Of course, I went with my friend and all of that went out the window.  We went to the Banana Republic Factory Store and I found this great long sleeve dress.  It caught my eye right away.  When the temperatures dip a little bit, just pair this dress with knee high boots and an extra sweater for later in the day as it gets colder and you have an ideal fall combination.

This dress is great for spending the day out and about and can easily be transitioned to a work piece.  I paired it with Modern Vintage boots, an Armani Exchange sweater jacket, and a crossbody bag from Aldo.  Comfortable attire for the summer-esqe days we have been enjoying.

No More Polos!

Payless heels TJ maxx H&M blazer

My first job out of college gave everyone in the accounting department polo shirts with the company logo on it.  We had a different color to wear depending on the day.  The worse part was, it was only my department that had to wear them around the entire office while everyone else was free to wear what they wanted.  You know there was always someone who would get the days mixed up and wear the red shirt on "green" day.  I can at least say it was funny at times.  Thankfully, I have come a long way from those days but I still like to infuse color into my office outfits, just in a different way.

This pink blazer from H&M is so versatile.  I love the color and it goes well with so many items in my closet.  It pairs perfectly with this pink floral scarf also from H&M and this purple Max & Cleo dress I discovered at Tj Maxx.  This dress has a slightly lower cut in the front and using the scarf as a cover up makes this suitable for the office.  I love scarves, I think they can turn the simplest outfit into something fabulous!  Finally, I went a bit matchy matchy with my purple heels!  These are probably one of my most comfortable pair of heels and they are from Payless!  I can wear these all day, love them!

Lady in Red

rent the runway red dress carlos miele

I’ve always wanted to wear a long red dress and I finally got my chance when I went to my husband's cousins wedding last week.  It was a beautiful affair with tons of family and friends.  It was great seeing all the family and celebrating the gorgeous couple.  The entire room was filled with love and I am so happy that I got to be a part of this!
This was my fourth wedding for the year, other than my own wedding, and the last one for 2014.  I already have one lined up for next year and I’ll be surprised if it turns out to be the only one.  My friends joke around with me that I am a bit of a wedding aficionado.  I have probably been to over 40 weddings in my adult life.  This actually helped me when it came time for my own wedding and allowed me to plan a 200 person New York wedding, mainly with guests who were from out of town, all on my own!  No planner used here!  I have a large family and my cousins range in age from late 40’s to just 6 years old, so the weddings aren’t even close to being over.  But I enjoy them so much.  I love weddings!!!!  Other than the fact that it is an amazing celebration of two peoples love for one another that I am always honored to be a part of, it is also an opportunity to get dressed up, see friends and family that you don't get to see often, eat great food, open bar, and dance all night!  They are the best parties!  I don’t think I have ever replied with a “no” to a wedding invitation or ever will.

I actually found this dress just four days before the wedding.  I was fortunate enough to head over to the RTR sale and grabbed this on the first day!  I was very lucky that it fit perfectly and didn't even need to be shortened, which is usually my issue with long dresses.  I paired it with a simple gold strap heel but glammed it up with my indian jewelry that I usually wear with my saris.  The contrast against this modern dress really made this outfit stand out more.  I used my gold DIY clutch that had just enough room for my lipstick, which you can never leave home without!

Road Trip

Bebe leather jacket maxi dress

I took a road trip to Philadelphia last Friday for my husband's cousins wedding. It’s always a great time to get together for family weddings, you get to see and catch up with all those family members that you don’t always get to see and celebrate such a joyous time. We rented a car and headed out on the road. The drive wasn’t too long, only taking 2 ½ hours. I chose to drive because I just feel like I have more experience driving than my husband. He is a great driver, don’t get me wrong, its just that I grew up in a driving city so I drove so much more than him since he's live in New York for so long where you barely ever need to drive anywhere. Okay, its also because I am a bit bad at giving directions. I prefer to just see what the list of directions are and do the driving myself. I remember when I was young and we would take family vacations, my dad would use a map and plan out our whole trip just by using that map. I followed in his footsteps and got my great sense of direction from him. When I left Miami for Los Angeles, I went to a few gas stations before I could even find a physical map and everyone looked at my crazy for wanting one! Thats just the old school in me.

Knowing that I will be driving for the next two hours, I wore this maxi dress. Its always about comfort and I also knew this would be practical for when we reached the hotel and met up with any other of the wedding guests staying at the same hotel. To make this maxi dress accommodating for fall, I paired it with this Bebe leather jacket I received from my best friend as a wedding shower gift. It is so lightweight and fits perfectly. Since it was still warmer than expected, I wore sandals from JustFab. I wore small pendants including an elephant pendant as well as my elephant ring. I really like elephants ;)

Astoria Finds: MP Taverna

Astoria is known for its Greek heritage and a large amount of Greek restaurants.  There are a great number to choose from and chef Michael Psilakis, has brought his MP Taverna to Astoria's exciting dining scene.  This one definitely stands out.  We chose to take my father-in-law here for his birthday and everyone was very happy with this decision.    From the moment you walk in, the decor and ambiance are extremely welcoming.  The menu has your traditional greek favorites like souvlaki but also had a number of special entrees including the lamb and mushroom risotto that I ended up ordering.  The flavors were amazing and I wanted more.  So happy to have this here in Astoria and will definitely be back soon!

I Wear Glasses

asos dress silk scarf

So its true, I wear glasses.  Actually, I wear contacts regularly but sometimes I need to give my eyes a break and pull out my glasses.  My eyesight is bad enough that I need to either wear my contacts or glasses and I could never go without either.  Only recently did I start wearing my glasses for long periods of time.  I have even gone two full weeks wearing this pair of glasses.  This may not be a long time for most but is for me, you used to never catch me in my glasses.  This stems from finding out I needed glasses when I was in the fourth grade.  Of course, back then, my parents didn't know about getting the extra thin lenses or thinking about frames that fit the shape of my face.  No, I had the large pink or gold metal glasses that followed me throughout my adolescence until my senior year in high school when I saved up my lunch money to buy myself my first pair of contacts.  So, for a long time, I never wanted to wear a pair of glasses again.  I never would even bother looking for a decent pair that I may like, I would just get something to have just in case I needed it.  Until last year, when I went for my yearly check up and the assistant at Lens Crafters helping me with my contacts convinced me to invest in something that would also make me happy.

I bought these Tiffany glasses and they have made a huge difference.  I don't feel like that awkward little girl with the big and thick glasses and now feel like they are another part of my outfit that I actually like on me.  They are another accessory and it's important, like anything else you wear, that you feel good in them!

Along with the glasses, this white dress with blue trim is from Asos which I paired with this silk scarf I bought in Shanghai last year.  It's very simple but I like how the dress fits and the exposed zipper adds the extra special detail.  The detail of the scarf is on display due to its contrast against the white dress.  Pair this with my T-strap heels from JustFab and enjoyed another great day of weather!

Asos Navy blue

Hi Everyone, I truly took advantage of the warm weather this past weekend.  I know, I can't stop talking about it, but it's because I am not ready for the cold weather.  This will be my fourth winter here in New York and they have only gotten colder each year.  So for service this past Sunday, I threw on a sleeveless dress to soak in the sunshine.  I am not a morning person at all so I don't make it out early enough every Sunday but when I do go, I still like to try to put my best foot forward the same way my mother would have us go to service when we were young.

This blue dress from Asos is made from a heavier knit fabric and I threw on a skinny black belt to accentuate my waist.  Then I felt like I had to twirl a few times of course, just because.  I love how ladylike and playful this dress is at the same time.

Andrea
